Carlos Alcaraz, winner on Sunday against Jack Draper, will play in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the second year in a row. The Spaniard took advantage of the Briton’s retirement after the end of the second set when he was leading two sets to nothing. He will face an impressive Tommy Paul against Davidovich Fokina.

Carlos Alcaraz still in the quarterfinals in Melbourne. As in the last edition, the Spanish champion will again compete in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this year. After his victory in four sets against the Portuguese Borges in the previous round when he had not left one lying in his first two matches, the world number 3 this time saw his task greatly facilitated by the abandonment of Jack Draper , his opponent of the day. Certainly, Alcaraz was leading two sets to nothing (7-5, 6-1) when the Briton threw in the towel, but the number 18 in the ranking had already seemed very diminished, and unable to properly defend his chances against the medalist of silver from the 2024 Olympic Games this summer. The protégé of Juan Carlos Ferrero, who surpassed his coach with this tenth career quarter-final in a Grand Slam tournament, at only 21 years old, was also the first disappointed to have won by taking advantage of Draper’s misfortunes.

In the quarters against an impressive Tommy Paul

“You never want to win like this. I’m obviously happy to be in the quarter-finals again here, but I’m sorry and sad for Jack, who is a good person and doesn’t deserve to be hurt. He couldn’t start the season one hundred percent physically, he had already had a problem before the tournament, I wish him the best and I’m sure he will come back stronger,” commented one afterwards. Alcaraz who nevertheless said he was “delighted with (his) level” at the dawn of starting the second week – and trying to reach the last four in Melbourne for the first time in his life – facing an impressive Tommy Paul earlier against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The American in fact only left… three games (6-1, 6-1, 6-1) to the scorer of Felix Auger-Aliassime in the 2nd round. The world number 11, semi-finalist of the tournament two years ago, should certainly pose a problem for Alcaraz in the quarters.
