How much are the huge losses caused by the fires in California?

California is facing one of the most devastating fires in recent history, ravaging ever since 11 days several areas of Los Angeles, including Pacific Palisades et Eaton. These forest fires, fueled by powerful winds from the Pacific Ocean, destroyed infrastructure and caused considerable human and economic losses.

According to data published by the Sylvis laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and reported by the Associated Press agency, 10.36 square kilometers devastated in the urban areas of Palisades and Eaton constitute the greatest losses in urban area since the 1980s. This damage is twice as high to those of the infamous Woolsey fire in 2018.

Alarming human and material toll

The authorities report that 25 people lost their liveswhile 12 000 structures were reduced to ashes, wiping out entire neighborhoods. More than 150,000 people were evacuated, and approximately 6.5 million inhabitants remain threatened by new fires.

To limit the spread of the flames, emergency services cut off electricity in 77,000 homes. Despite partial control of fires in certain areas, the danger persists with more than 37 000 acres burned, an area equivalent to that of Washington DC

A staggering economic cost

The damage caused by these fires is estimated between 250 and 275 billion dollarsheavily impacting the Californian economy. These losses include the destruction of infrastructure, expenses related to evacuations, and disruption of commercial activities.
