Donald Trump spoke to NBC News on Saturday regarding the ceasefire and hostage release agreement approved by the Israeli government. Asked about his confidence in the release of the hostages, the president-elect responded firmly: “We will see very soon, and it better hold.” Trump revealed that he advised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “keep doing what needs to be done. You have to – it has to end. We want it to end, but you have to keep doing what needs to be done.” He also announced an upcoming meeting with Netanyahu, without specifying the details.
Regarding how his administration intends to ensure compliance with the ceasefire, Trump emphasizes the notion of respect: “The United States must be respected again, and this must happen quickly. Respect is the main word I use,” he told NBC News. “If they respect us, the deal will hold. If they don’t respect us, it will be hell.”
This intervention is a continuation of his personal involvement in the hostage crisis since early December 2024, when he threatened that “hell would have to pay” if the hostages were not released before his inauguration on January 20 . Last Thursday, before the official signing of the agreement in Qatar, Trump reiterated the urgency of finalizing the agreement before Monday: “We changed the course of things, and we did it quickly, and frankly, it is worth better that it be done before I take the oath,” he said during a podcast interview with Dan Bongino. “We shook hands, and we signed some documents, but it’s better to get it done,” he added.
