NFL: Rams must find a way to stop Saquon Barkley

The playoff game between the Rams and the Eagles will be presented on RDS2 and RDS.ca starting at 3 p.m. Sunday.

PREMATCH

Sean McVay analyzed ways the Los Angeles Rams could potentially stop Saquon Barkley – the ninth running back to reach the 2,000-yard mark in NFL history – considering the consequences if they don’t. didn’t do.

“If they beat you doing what you do, they will trample you and embarrass you,” the head coach said.

McVay and the Rams should know this better than any other team.

Barkley, who had an extraordinary season, had his best game against the Rams last November.

Barkley had rushing touchdowns of 70 and 72 yards in the second half and finished with 255 rushing yards, a Philadelphia Eagles record. It was the ninth-most rushing yards in an NFL game, and he totaled 302 rushing yards – the 12th player in NFL history to surpass 300, and the first Eagles player to reach this mark.

Against the Rams on Sunday, Barkley is ready to do it again.

For the second straight week in the playoffs, the Eagles face a team for the second time this year. A week after beating the Green Bay Packers for the second time, the Eagles host the Rams, just seven weeks after Barkley was the architect of a 37-20 victory at SoFi Stadium.

“They’ll see things on the videos that they’ll want to do differently,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said.

The same goes for the Eagles.

The Rams’ defense, just 22nd in the NFL against the ground game, would have been just as happy to erase video of the game as to be forced this week to watch Barkley crush them.

Barkley broke LeSean McCoy’s Eagles records of 217 rushing yards in 2013 and Duce Staley’s 296 total yards in 2000. He also had the greatest rushing performance of all time against the Rams, surpassing 253 yards of DeMarco Murray, for the Dallas Cowboys, in 2011.

The Rams couldn’t stop Barkley the first time, and there’s not much statistically to indicate they’ll stop him this time around. The Rams have given up 353.1 yards per game this season, including 130 on the ground.

“I think when you have humbling experiences with the right people, that’s where the real opportunities for growth are,” McVay said.

“I think we had a lot of guys that, as a team, you can really look at yourself and say, ‘Is this really what we want to be? What are some things we can adjust and adapt?’ »

The Rams defense recovered from this humiliating defeat. Not only has she adjusted, but she has arguably become the team’s strength down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs.

Just ask the Vikings.

The Rams didn’t let go of Sam Darnold and his hapless blockers, recording nine sacks, and they also held receiver Justin Jefferson in check in the second half of their 27-9 victory.

That put the Eagles on their toes.

“Every time guys play together and build cohesion and bond, they’re going to play better and better,” Rams offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said.

Barkley ran for 119 yards in his playoff debut with the Eagles and the running back, who spent his entire career playing in East Coast winters, should be up for the challenge in a game in which many snow is expected.
