Retired from the professional world of tennis since March 2022, Ashleigh Barty published a memoir that same year entitled My Dream Time in which she looked back on her career.
Since the controversies surrounding Danielle Collins’ provocations this week at the Australian Open, an extract from this book resurfaced in an article written by journalist Ben Rothenberg.
In this extract, Barty confides and evokes the wish she had not to face the American in the final of the 2022 edition:
“Who I play against will be decided the following day. Iga Swiatek plays against Danielle Collins, and for me the equation is simple. I love Iga and have a difficult relationship with Danielle.
-I want to play Iga. I want to share this moment with her. But Danielle wins, and I remember the matches we’ve had in the past and how they were never fun.
I never leave the court after a match against Danielle thinking that it was good tennis. Every match was a horrible and tiring clash. »
