Atletico Madrid lose to Leganes, leaving Real Madrid in La Liga leadership

Serbian defender Matija Nastasic’s lone goal in the 49th minute proved decisive, shattering Atletico Madrid’s hopes of retaining top spot. Now they must count on their local rivals, Real Madrid, to stumble against Las Palmas this Sunday.

Nastasic delivered an impeccable performance, posting a 100% success rate in won duels, making a crucial defensive save and sealing the victory for the Leganes team.

This goal puts pressure on the tactics of Diego Simeone, who this time opted for an offensive approach. His team recorded 19 shots, four of which were on target, but the ball did not find the net.

This defeat is a hard blow for Atletico Madrid and their coach Diego Simeone. Not only does this put their La Liga lead in jeopardy, but it also paves the way for Real Madrid, while also ending the colchoneros’ impressive winning streak.

Before the match against Leganes, Atletico Madrid had accumulated 15 consecutive victories in all competitions. However, Nastasic’s goal shattered their aspirations and left strikers such as Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez unable to impact the match.

“I want to thank the players for these 15 great matches. Today we had to lose, although I believe the team deserves at least a draw,” Simeone reflected after the match.

Atletico Madrid will have to change focus quickly, as they host Bayer Leverkusen in their next match in the UEFA Champions League.

After the first six days of the UEFA Champions League, Atletico Madrid currently occupies 11th place with 12 points.
