Cristina Pedra highlights the 312% explosion of investments in sport!

The president of the Câmara Municipal de Funchal today attended the inauguration of the new members of the Madeira Association for the period 2025-2028. The ceremony took place in the afternoon in the Municipal Assembly Hall, where it highlighted the importance that the current executive gives to sport. This results in a notable strengthening of the funds allocated to the sports association.

This event, which attracted a large audience and distinguished guests, was notably the opportunity to present the regional awards for the year 2024. Cristina Pedra underlined that “in 2021, our budget for sport amounted to 315,000 euros. For 2025, this amount will reach 1 million 300,000 euros,” representing an increase of more than 312%. “It is not only financial support, but also rigorous monitoring of the implementation of activities and the use of available funds,” she said.

The mayor also praised the “30 years of work of the Madeira Tennis Association”, highlighting its “contribution to the development of this sport and the training of renowned athletes”. She insisted that “investment in sport is an investment in healthy lifestyles and in the human and social development of the city. Investing in an athlete means contributing to the development of the city. We maintain our slogan which promotes drug-free sport, focusing not only on sporting events, but also on a lifestyle and the choice of good directions.”

Cristina Pedra also highlighted the success of the Young Athlete Program, implemented in 2023, which “has offered considerable support to sports clubs in the region”. She recalled that “in 2023, clubs received 15 euros per athlete. For 2025, this amount will increase to 25 euros per athlete, which will already benefit around 6,000 young people.” In addition, she highlighted the administration’s commitment to the renovation of sports infrastructure, citing the rehabilitation of social neighborhoods, gardens and sports fields.

The president of the CMF took the opportunity to encourage the project of the Madeira Tennis Association for the Papagaio Verde Complex, saying: “Count on this institution to carry out the necessary brainstorming sessions”. “As long as we are in office, we remain open to collaborating with entities that wish to promote sports practices and facilities in our city, as is the case with this great project,” she concluded.

The current situation of sport in Funchal raises questions about the lasting impact of these investments. To what extent will these efforts contribute to the coherent development of sports practices in the region and the development of young athletes? The answer could influence future public and community investment priorities.
