rising prices in 2025

Studies conducted by Testachats and PingPrice indicate solid price increases in Belgian supermarkets since the beginning of December. Several factors are at work.

In the first week of the year, Delhaize increased the price of 3,200 products (10% of its assortment) by an average of 4.26%. This is what emerges from a PingPrice study, the application which allows you to compare the prices of brands.

The competition did not do the same because it spread its increases more over time. Thus, only 878 products were revised upwards at Carrefour, but the increase was more severe (+ 6.5%). At Colruyt (PingPrice only evaluates the Auderghem store), 930 references have cost more since the start of the year.

Several factors are at work to explain these increases. On the one hand, the evolution of inflation in our brands. It rose to 2.81% in December according to Testachats. It’s better than the other months, but the December 2024 shopping cart costs 27% more than the December 2022 one!

Over a year, certain prices have fallen (paper products, cling film or vegetables except potatoes, etc.), others have literally soared, such as olive oil (+ 23.5%). ), orange juice (+ 21%) or dark chocolate (+ 33%).

Dairy products are suffering from the impact of blue tongue disease (the producer’s liter of milk went from 0.43 euros at the start of 2024 to 0.51 today). This explains why the price of cheese has soared (+10%) in the three aforementioned brands.

Finally, the increase is also linked to negotiations, still ongoing, between suppliers and distributors. Inflation inevitably led to price increases by manufacturers. This also explains why private labels have increased more than the average, especially at Carrefour.
