Swiatek does better than in 2024, Paolini takes the door – rts.ch

Iga Swiatek (WTA 2), beaten in the 3rd round in Melbourne in 2024, did better on Saturday by qualifying for the round of 16 of the Australian Open. The Polish Iga Swiatek lined up a 4th victory in as many duels against Emma Raducanu (61), winner of the US Open in 2021. Jasmine Paolini (4) was, however, eliminated.

The five-time Grand Slam winner won 6-1 6-0 and thus joined her rivals Aryna Sabalenka (1), double title holder, and Coco Gauff (3) in the round of 16. Semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2022, Swiatek was eliminated in the 3rd round of the Australian Open in 2024.

Jasmine Paolini, on the other hand, was knocked out by Elina Svitolina (27), whom she faced for the first time. Finalist at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2024 and the only player with Coco Gauff (3) to have reached the round of 16 in each of the 4 Grand Slam tournaments last season, Paolini lost 2-6 6-4 6 -0. The 30-year-old Ukrainian qualified for the second consecutive time for the 8th in Melbourne, her best result in the Australian major.
