Jannik Sinner easily passes Marcos Giron to continue his title defense at the Australian Open.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner extended his remarkable winning streak with a convincing 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marcos Giron, securing his place in the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open. The reigning champion demonstrated his characteristic calm and precision, maintaining his undefeated start to the season.

Sinner’s unstoppable momentum

Sinner entered the Australian Open in great form, enjoying a 14-match winning streak after winning titles at the Shanghai Masters, ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals in late 2024. Having opted to skip warm-up tournaments in favor of exhibition matches in Melbourne, the Italian’s approach appears to be paying off.

This latest victory marks his 10th consecutive victory at the Australian Open, where he defends the title he won last year.

Dominance from the start

Facing Giron for the second time in his career, Sinner wasted no time in asserting his dominance. He broke the American’s serve in the first game and maintained control throughout the first set, saving a break point while serving for the set to win it 6-3.

The second set followed a similar scenario, with Sinner breaking early to lead 3-2. Giron created a few opportunities to level the score but couldn’t capitalize on Sinner’s resilience. The Italian concluded the set 6-4 with clinical precision.

A dramatic ending

The third set saw a series of break points, with both players trading blows early on. Sinner broke first, but Giron fought back, converting his seventh break point of the match to level the set at 2-2. However, that marked the end of Giron’s resistance, as Sinner strung together four straight games to seal the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

What’s next for Sinner?

With his third victory of the tournament, Sinner awaits the winner of the clash between Holger Rune and Miomir Kecmanovic in the fourth round. Despite the challenges ahead, the 23-year-old Italian remains the player to beat in Melbourne, with his impeccable performances cementing his top seed position.

“It’s always important to start strong, especially against a player like Marcos who can challenge you physically,” Sinner said after the match. “I am happy with my performance, but there is always room for improvement.”

A growing rivalry with Alcaraz?

The prospect of a semi-final showdown with Carlos Alcaraz looms, reigniting their growing rivalry. Both players are in great shape and could put on one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.

For now, Sinner’s focus remains on his next opponent and his quest for back-to-back Australian Open titles.
