French journalist Ariane Lavrilleux escapes legal proceedings

Ariane Lavrilleux was summoned to court this Friday, January 17. She feared indictment for having revealed the complicity of the French army in mass killings perpetrated by the Egyptian army. Finally placed under the status of assisted witness after three hours of interrogation, she spoke of a “ immense relief » before the court.

Investigative journalist Ariane Lavrilleux should escape trial. After three hours of interrogation, she explained that she had been placed under the status of assisted witness because “ of the public interest of the investigation published by Disclose and Complément d’investigation ( 2) and the absence of serious or consistent evidence against me ».

« Justice showed that it was independent, that it was not the armed wing of the Ministry of Defense “, she added. “ But this is not the end of the battle », warned Ariane Lavrilleux, who believes that French legislation must change, because it “ allows journalists to be pursued and searched ».

Thibaut Bruttin, director general of RSF, spoke in court about the flaws in the current system, a “ consensus for ambitious reform » with a “ strengthening the role of the judge », « the nullity of the procedures » et « a sanction for the abusive use of the notion of overriding imperative and violation of the secrecy of sources ».
