On Saturday, the 38-year-old ousted No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4 in three hours and eight minutes. It was his very first victory against a Top 4 seed in 65 Grand Slam appearances.
“I did the job,” he summed up on the pitch.
Having lost his serve in the eighth game of the first set, Monfils was no longer broken in the competition. After taking a two-sets-to-one lead, both players were feeling the burn. Monfils, however, managed to make clutch shots as the rallies continued to emerge victorious.
