German lucky loser Eva Lys, 128th in the world, continues her daydream at the Australian Open. The 23-year-old, called at the last second to replace Anna Kalinskaya, earned her ticket to the round of 16 by dominating Jacqueline Cristian (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) on Saturday.
After losing the first set, she had the merit of widening the gap at the start of each of the two sets and never letting her rival come back.
Lys will face the Polish Iga Swiatek, seeded n°2 in the second week, the same one who has just brutally knocked Emma Raducanu out of the table. Before overthrowing the 82nd player in the world at the WTA, the German had dominated Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell (6-2, 6-2) and Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-2, 3-6, 6-4).
Cristian, who was also playing her first third round Grand Slam match, dismissed Croatian lucky loser Petra Martic (6-2, 4-6, 7-6 [7]), and the Italian Lucia Bronzetti (7-5, 7-5).
-At the end of this tournament, Lys is certain to enter the Top 100 and Cristian will get closer to his best career ranking, namely 57th.
