The TikTok application, used by more than 170 million Americans, could disappear as soon as Sunday if no decision is made by President Joe Biden. This situation stems from the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the ban on TikTok, passed last April with broad support in Congress.
Washington, January 17, 2025 – The law requires the app to sell its U.S. operations due to national security concerns, including its alleged ties to the Chinese government. However, TikTok says that without immediate intervention from the White House to clarify its position, it will have no choice but to cease operations in the United States.
As the Biden administration leaves that responsibility to Donald Trump, who will take office on Monday, TikTok is pressing for a clear statement. “Without a prompt response, we will close on Sunday,” the company warned. For his part, Trump has raised the possibility of delaying or modifying the application of the ban, but no formal decision has yet been taken.
The Supreme Court, on the other hand, reaffirmed that TikTok’s massive data collection poses a serious threat to national security. Meanwhile, TikTok’s CEO stresses the importance of defending the freedom of expression of its millions of users.
-If the ban stands, it will mark a major turning point, raising questions about the balance between national security imperatives and digital freedoms.
