The US Supreme Court voted unanimously this Friday to bring into force a federal law banning TikTok in the United States, starting Sunday, January 18, unless the Chinese company sells its American subsidiary.

A risk to American national security

The high court believes that the distribution of the Chinese social network in the United States, which has nearly 170 million American users, poses a threat to the country’s national security.

If the TikTok application should not disappear from the phones of already registered users, once the law comes into force, it will no longer be possible to download it and updates will not be available.** The Ministry of Justice estimates that this measure will eventually make the application unusable.

The decision comes as Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House. Aware of the popularity of TikTok and with nearly 14.7 million followers on the application, the president-elect promised to negotiate a solution to suspend the law banning the social network.

On his own social network Truth SocialDonald Trump recently said that the future of TikTok in the United States would be among the topics discussed during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
