TikTok in the United States, Apple unveils the iPhone 17 Air, OpenAI launches Tasks for ChatGPT – Arizona News

Dear friends of Conecta Arizona, welcome to this new edition of #LatteNews, your meeting place for technology and social media news.

Let’s get started!

???? Unsurprisingly, let’s talk about TikTok. The Chinese platform is heading towards a possible ban in the United States from January 19, if its parent company, ByteDance, does not transfer the application to American owners. This stems from national security concerns over its ties to the Chinese government. In Supreme Court hearings, TikTok’s lawyers stressed that this law could set a dangerous precedent allowing Congress to regulate other foreign companies in similar ways, which would violate the First Amendment. Although some justices have expressed concerns about the constitutional implications, the majority appears to lean toward upholding the law, supported by a broad bipartisan consensus in Congress.

Meanwhile, TikTok continues to innovate by launching an advanced video editing tool, integrated into its Symphony suite, with features such as AI-generated avatars and automatic translations, aimed at simplifying content creation and attracting advertisers. However, uncertainty over its future in the United States raises questions about the impact for its 170 million users, content creators and advertisers who rely on the platform for their work. The Supreme Court’s decision will be key in determining TikTok’s future in one of its most crucial markets.

Rumors are already circulating regarding a possible takeover of TikTok by Elon Musk in the United States.

???? Apple is set to launch the iPhone 17 Air this fall, an ultra-thin model that will be lighter than current models and replace the Plus models. This phone will feature a 6.6-inch screen, a 48 MP main camera, and will use the first modem developed by Apple. Additionally, it will be used to test technologies that could be used in future foldable devices. With this launch, Apple intends to assert its place in the market for modern and refined smartphones.

???? OpenAI has launched a new feature called “Tasks” for paid ChatGPT users, allowing you to schedule reminders and recurring tasks, like receiving daily news summaries or weekend plans based on the weather. This feature, which will be available this week on the web application, represents a first step towards more autonomous assistants, known as AI agents. Although “Tasks” has limitations, such as the inability to make purchases or monitor background activities, it represents a notable step forward from traditional assistants like Siri or Alexa.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently accused of sexual abuse by his sister, also predicted that Artificial Super Intelligence will emerge this year, while announcing that 2025 would be decisive for the development of AI agents, predicting that these systems will begin to integrate into daily life, including in the professional environment.

With “Tasks”, OpenAI seeks to learn from the use of this tool to improve it and develop more advanced systems in the future, paving the way for assistants with significantly more complex capabilities.
