MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United led emotional tributes to Denis Law, calling him the “hero of a generation” following confirmation of his death at the age of 84. Law, Scotland’s all-time top scorer, was diagnosed with dementia in 2021.
In an official statement, Manchester United expressed their grief, noting: “Everyone at Manchester United mourns the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End.” The club hailed his status as “one of the club’s greatest and most loved players”, highlighting his exceptional talent as an “ultimate goalscorer” who brought style, spirit and a love of the game.
During his illustrious career at United, Law scored an impressive total of 237 goals in 404 appearances, forming part of the famous ‘Sacred Trinity’ alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best during the iconic 1960s team.
Law’s accolades included being the only Scottish player to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or. UEFA paid tribute to the Football legend via social media: “On behalf of European football, we are deeply saddened by the passing of Denis Law. He was a true great of Scottish football, winning the Ballon d’Or in 1964 and lifting the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968. Rest in peace, Denis.”

-Scotland’s national teams also expressed their condolences on social media, saying: “A true great. We will never see his like again.” Former United captain Bryan Robson reflected on Law’s generous spirit and remarkable talent, writing in a column: “Denis was more than a fantastic footballer; he was a fantastic man. So generous with his time, and all this delivered with his great sense of humor.” Robson highlighted Law’s iconic status, recalling the image of him with his sleeves rolled up, saluting after scoring a goal.
Liverpool joined the flood of tributes, noting: “Denis was a rival player but so well-loved. As one former manager, Bill Shankly, said, ‘Denis Law could dance on eggshells.’” Meanwhile , former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno shared his fond memories, highlighting Law’s playful character and charisma, both on and off the field.
The Alzheimer’s Society expressed its sadness, recognizing Law’s role in raising awareness and funds for the cause.
As well as United, Law’s legacy also resonates with his other former clubs, including Huddersfield Town, where he began his career, Torino and Manchester City, who have all shared tributes. Huddersfield noted: “A legend not only of our great club but an immortal of the sport as a whole, he will be deeply missed and his memory will be cherished by us all.” Torino warmly commemorated him as an “iconic figure” and Manchester City said: “All of Manchester, including everyone at City, mourns with you. Rest in peace, Denis.”
