Denis Law: The football world pays tribute to the Manchester United legend

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United paid emotional tribute to one of its legendary figures, Denis Law, following the announcement of his death at the age of 84 on Friday. Affectionately known as the ‘King of the Stretford End’, Law remains a symbol of greatness for the club.

Law, who held the joint Scottish top scorer title, had been diagnosed with dementia in 2021. The club expressed their sadness in a statement, reflecting on Law’s profound impact and lasting legacy. “Everyone at Manchester United mourns the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End. He will always be regarded as one of the club’s greatest and most cherished players. As the ultimate goalscorer, his talent, his spirit and passion for the game made him a hero for a generation,” the statement said.

In his 404 appearances for Manchester United, Law has scored an impressive 237 goals. He was part of the famous ‘Holy Trinity’ alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best during the club’s dominant era in the 1960s. Additionally, Law remains the only Scottish player to have won the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

UEFA also paid tribute to the football icon, saying on social media: “On behalf of European football, we are deeply saddened by the passing of Denis Law. A true great of Scottish football, he won the Ballon d’Or in 1964 and lifted the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968. Rest in peace, Denis.” The Scottish national teams echoed the sentiment, saying: “A truly great one. We won’t see his like again.”

Even his rivals recognized Law’s greatness, with Liverpool posting a statement on social media: “Denis was a rival player, but he was well respected. As Bill Shankly once said, ‘Denis Law could dance on shells of eggs.’”

Former boxing champion Frank Bruno shared his memories of Law on social media, saying: “What a legend with a double L. I loved him as a player; he was a character. I remember once, while I was in the dressing room with George Best and Denis, he joked, ‘Okay, you hit him, I’ll steal his money.’ He had a quick response and adorable charm; people like Denis were rare—pure gold on and off the field.”

The Alzheimer’s Society also expressed its condolences, saying: “We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of our supporter, Denis Law, from dementia. We are grateful that Denis and his family have raised awareness and funds for the Society Alzheimer’s.”

Before his illustrious career at Manchester United, Law played for Huddersfield Town, Torino and Manchester City, where he had two spells, concluding his career in the 1974 season. Huddersfield Town remember him fondly, saying: “A legend not only of our great club but an immortal of the sport as a whole he will be deeply missed, and his memory will be cherished by us all;

Torino also shared their memories, writing: “We remember with emotion and affection our former center forward, Denis Law, from the 1961-62 season. An iconic figure in the history of the Granata: the time spent together during the Taurus centenary, December 3, 2006, was unforgettable.”
