legend and 1964 Ballon d’Or winner Denis Law dies aged 84

Scottish legend and Manchester United icon Denis Law has passed away at the age of 84. Born in Aberdeen in 1940, Law was the last survivor of Manchester City’s famous ‘Holy Trinity’ alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best. The trio statue remains one of the most visited and iconic landmarks outside Old Trafford.

Law’s illustrious career was inseparably linked to Manchester United, where he celebrated European success in 1968, in addition to two English league titles and an FA Cup victory. His professional journey began as a striker at Huddersfield Town before making the breakthrough move to Manchester United in 1960. After one season he transferred to Torino, setting transfer records of the era before returning to Manchester and consolidate his status as a club legend.

During his eleven seasons at Old Trafford, Law scored almost 200 goals, securing a place in the hearts of United fans. His peak came in 1964 when he was awarded the Ballon d’Or, beating out Spanish nominees Luis Suárez and Amancio Amaro, who finished second and third respectively.

Law also wrote his name in sporting history by completing a controversial transfer from United to rivals Manchester City in 1973. A poignant moment came when a Law goal in the final match of the season inadvertently confirmed the relegation of Manchester United. Despite his goal, a dejected Law chose not to celebrate, reflecting the deep connection he had with the club that had been his home for so long.

On the international stage, Law scored 31 goals in 54 appearances for Scotland, a record which still stands. The football world mourns the loss of a true legend. Rest in peace.
