The association of fine particles with highly toxic chemicals in urban environments has deleterious effects on the health of those exposed to them. But other factors could contribute to pushing the death toll into the thousands in the years to come.

The fires that have been burning for 10 days now in the Los Angeles region have officially left 27 dead, a toll which could however increase in the coming days, as rescue services progress in the ruins of Altadena and Pacific Palisades and discover new bodies. But the smoke from these fires continues to cause deaths, particularly among first responders and the most vulnerable populations.

The Los Angeles Times revealed that the police officers who intervened on site were recently alerted to the strong presence in the air of highly toxic substances, such as lead and asbestos, but also other chemical components. They were recommended to decontaminate their uniform before returning home and to wear N95 masks at all times, filtering fine particles.
