After twenty-one months at the head of the Belgian national team, Italian-German coach Domenico Tedesco, 39, was ousted from his post on Friday January 17. A hardly surprising decision: the elimination of the Red Devils in the round of 16 of the Euro after another defeat against France (0-1), in July 2024, and a meager record of 4 points out of 18 in the Nations League , after a final match lost 1-0 against Israel, sealed the fate of Roberto Martinez’s successor, who left to coach Portugal in January 2023.
Domenico Tedesco’s performances could satisfy neither the supporters nor the leaders of Belgian football. The latter feared a relegation of the team to Nations League B in the event of a defeat against Ukraine in March, as well as further setbacks during the qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup.

-Symbolically, Domenico Tedesco had not attended the draw for this competition, at the beginning of December 2024. He therefore feared that what he called, on Friday, his “beautiful story” is quickly coming to an end. In a statement he said: “I am 100% sure that the team will win against Ukraine and qualify for the World Cup without any problems. It is only at the beginning of its development and will still cause a sensation in the coming years”.
