Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland officially kicked off her campaign on Friday to try to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, inviting members of her political party online to nominate her “as the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada”.
The one who slammed the door of the council of ministers last December, launched her campaign website, changed the interface and the description of her accounts on social networks, in addition to signing an open letter in the daily newspapers “ Le Devoir” and “The Toronto Star”.
Ms. Freeland’s candidacy, which has yet to be formalized by the PLC authorities, has been expected for a long time. The rumor that she was tempted by the leadership of the PLC had been circulating for more than a year.
According to a very succinct statement made by the former Minister of Finance on “X”, her “official launch” of the campaign will be Sunday, even if her intentions were already clear on Friday. “I am launching myself to defend Canada,” said -she writes.
-At the start of this week, a source close to Ms. Freeland’s campaign team indicated that she intended to make the jump before the swearing-in of President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, the January 20.
This person, who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about these issues at this time, indicated that the first policy that the aspiring Liberal leader will propose is a plan of retaliatory measures equivalent, dollar for dollar, to the tariffs that Mr. Trump promises to impose on Canadian imports.
On Thursday, another candidacy which had been the subject of speculation for a long time, that of the former central bank governor, Mark Carney, was announced by the main interested party.
