Domenico Tedesco has been dismissed from his position as coach of the Belgian national team, as announced by the Belgian Football Union (URBSFA) this Friday. The search for his successor is already underway.
According to a press release from the URBSFA, “Following a thorough evaluation, the sports committee decided to end the collaboration with coach Domenico Tedesco. This decision was approved by the board of directors. The search for his successor is currently in progress.”
Tedesco, who took the reins of the Belgian team in February 2023, began a campaign with a renewed squad, which made it possible to start a promising qualification for the Euro. However, the team ultimately disappointed in the tournament, similar to their lackluster performance in the Nations League campaign that followed.
In addition to Tedesco, the Belgian Football Union expressed its gratitude to its entire technical staff, which included Andreas Hinkel and Luke Benstead as assistants, Umberto Tedesco as performance analyst, the coach of goalkeepers Max Urwantschky, and physical trainer Vladimir Cepzanovic.

The new coach will face the challenge of reviving the spirit of the national team ahead of the crucial matches against Ukraine in March to secure their place in League A of the Nations League, not forgetting the upcoming World Cup qualifiers 2026 which will begin three months later.

Having taken over from Roberto Martinez, Tedesco initially got off to a promising start, but recent results, including a round of 16 exit at the Euros and a measly 4 points from 18 in the Nations League, led to his dismissal. “I have always been proud to be the coach of the Belgian national team; we have accomplished great things together. Unfortunately, a great adventure ends today,” Tedesco said in the Belgian press release. URBSFA.
The former coach is “100% convinced that the team will win against Ukraine in the Nations League playoffs in March and qualify for the World Cup.” He added: “This team is just at the beginning of its development and will achieve great things in the years to come. From the bottom of my heart, I wish the players, the incredible staff of the federation and the supporters all the best. “
Peter Willems, CEO of the URBSFA, recognized Tedesco’s contributions, noting that he “made an excellent start as coach, proving that great things are possible even after the previous generation has left,” and praised his integration of several young players into the squad. “We would like to thank him and his team for their work and commitment, and we wish them the best for the future.”
