The Biden administration does not plan to block TikTok despite a law requiring ByteDance to sell its US operations by Sunday. The decision is up to the Trump administration, which favors an American takeover to protect the data, according to government sources.
Outgoing US President Joe Biden’s administration does not plan to take steps to make TikTok inaccessible in the United States when the law banning the Chinese social network takes effect on Sunday. This is what a government official told ABC News.
Under the law passed last year, TikTok’s owner, Chinese company ByteDance, must sell its U.S. operations by January 19. Otherwise, the very popular application risks being banned in the United States. Americans will still be able to use it, but will no longer be able to download it. Additionally, the app may no longer receive updates in the United States. TikTok opposed the law and the Supreme Court has yet to rule on the matter.
The Biden administration is now warning that it will not enforce the law when it takes effect, the day before the Democratic president leaves the White House. “TikTok should continue to operate under ownership of a US entity. Given the date of entry into force (of the law, Editor’s note), during a holiday weekend, one day before the inauguration, it will be up to the next administration to implement it” a government official told ABC News.

The administration of future President Donald Trump also does not want TikTok to become inaccessible, but for the platform to end up in American hands. “We’ll find a way to preserve it, while protecting people’s data“, assured Mike Waltz, Mr. Trump’s new National Security Advisor, during an interview with Fox News on Thursday.
