two years after the murder of Martinez Zogo, a trial bogged down in procedural questions

Two years ago, in Cameroon, those close to presenter Martinez Zogo saw him alive for the last time. His death shook Cameroon. The investigation was peppered with twists and turns in an atmosphere of distrust and interference from political actors. And now the trial of 17 defendants before the Yaoundé military court appears bogged down in procedural issues.

On January 17, 2023, the star presenter of a popular radio daily in Yaoundé left work at the end of the day to return home, but he is removed in front of a gendarmerie station in the capital. His naked and tortured body was found on January 22, on a plot of land outside the city. In his show on Amplitude FM, Martinez Zogo denounced small and big corruption, insulted the powerful, without ever attacking President Paul Biya.

« We’ve been going around in circles for two years already », sighs for his part the lawyer of Justin Danwe, former director of operations of the DGRE, who recognizes the involvement of his service in the kidnapping, but not in the assassination of Martinez Zogo. “ Two years in prison without being tried, we are beyond the reasonable time limit », adds Maître Jacques Mbuny.

From the investigation to the trial, military justice accumulated procedural flaws, according to the lawyers of the defendants, but also of the family. Result: a calendar suspended from the expected decisions of the court of appeal.
