Brazilian footballer Neymar recently recounted the discussion he had with Lionel Messi, his former teammate, before leaving FC Barcelona in 2017.
With the player often considered to have reached his peak at Barcelona, many were surprised by his decision to leave.
For a record transfer fee of 222 million euros, the Brazilian left the Catalan team to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The Selecao star played for Barcelona from 2013 to 2017 and was part of the treble-winning side in 2014-2015.
The Brazilian footballer helped the Catalan team by contributing 105 goals and 76 assists in 186 matches.
Known as MSN (Messi, Suarez, Neymar), Neymar established an attacking combination with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez when he was at Barcelona.
This Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Brazilian superstar was interviewed by Fabrizio Romano on the latter’s podcast.
-A brief excerpt from the interview reveals that Neymar Jr. recalls a discussion he had with Lionel Messi before leaving FC Barcelona.
He said: “Messi came to me and said: ‘Why do you want to leave? Do you want to be the best in the world? I’m going to make you the best in the world’”.
Lionel Messi was forced to leave Barcelona in 2021 due to the club’s financial difficulties.
After becoming a free agent and joining Paris Saint-Germain, he got back together with Neymar Jr.
Between 2021 and 2023, the two played together with PSG before joining Inter Miami and Al-Hilal respectively.
