In less than two weeks, candidate Gustav Leonhardt knocks on the head, accompanied by his team and Prince Carl Philip will travel to Lyon to compete in the final of the biannual Bocuse d’Or world championship. They will participate together in this globally recognized competition to reveal talents and give them international recognition. Before D-Day, the prince and Minister Peter Kullgren made a point of visiting the brigade’s training kitchen in Stockholm on Monday January 13. They also took part in timed tests in preparation for the events, scheduled for January 26 and 27. The two men took the opportunity to taste the preparations created by the professionals.
Culinary art in the spotlight
The competition is not a first for Gustav Leonhardt. He participated in the events as a commis during the 2017-2019 cycle, alongside Sébastien Gibrand, Bocuse d’Argent 2019. But by winning the silver medal at the Bocuse d’Or Europe in 2024, the commis, today now become a chef, qualified for the grand final. In the city that the culinary critic Curnonsky nicknamed “the world capital of gastronomy”, twenty-four teams and therefore twenty-four countries come together each year to compete for the prestigious prize imagined by Paul Bocuse in 1987. But only a lucky group will leave with the coveted title of winner.
This year, for the theme platter, the “candidates will have 5 hours and 30 minutes to highlight their talent and their culinary know-how by working with venison, foie gras and tea”, as specified on the website of the event. Everyone will have to add identifiable markers of their respective origins to their dish. As for the plate theme, the cooks will have to sublimate the lobster and celery in 4 hours and 40 minutes, in a hot preparation for 16 people, once again, in the image of their region. A heavy program, at the end of which the winners will be able to boast of embodying excellence in culinary art.
A regular at the house
The husband of Princess Sofia of Sweden is no stranger to this exercise. He has been following the Swedish team through the different stages of the process for many years and is also the sponsor of the competition Chef of the yearSweden’s most important cooking competition of which he was a jury, for the twelfth time, in October 2024. Although he cannot be at the Bocuse d’Or judges’ table for obvious reasons, the prince will be present in Lyon, on January 27, to encourage Swedish cooks and give them some expert advice.
