The round of 16 of the Coupe de France held a lot of surprises. For Ligue 1 clubs, this round was synonymous with a real massacre. There are the fratricidal duels between L1 teams, but there have also been some thunderclaps like the elimination of Olympique Lyonnais by Bourgoin-Jallieu, an N3 club. A bitter defeat described as “shame» and “professional misconduct» by the Rhone leaders. But Les Gones were not the only ones to have bitten the dust.

Fourteenth in the Ligue 1 standings, Jorge Sampaoli’s Stade Rennais is not doing well. Opposed to a Troyes team still poorly ranked in Ligue 2 (15th in the ranking), the Breton club was not able to qualify. A new defeat which confirms that Sampaoli has still not found the solution to redress the situation. Finally, we almost had two other big surprises. Toulouse needed to go through a penalty shootout to defeat Thaon, resident of National 3. For its part, Paris Saint-Germain, defending champion, was very scared last night in Clermont.
L1 clubs spared
Opposed to Espaly, another N3 club, Luis Enrique’s team was certainly reshuffled, but it was led for 34 minutes and had to wait until the 88th minute and a goal from Bradley Barcola to validate its ticket for the eighth . Result, even if there is still a round of 16 to be played between Haguenau (N2) and Dunkirk (L2), there are only eight elite clubs left out of the seventeen entered!

-However, the residents of L1 were rather spared for the draw of the eighth. There will indeed be a duel between elite teams (Strasbourg-Angers), but Nice, Paris, Reims, Lille, Toulouse and Brest have all inherited opponents well within their reach. The Rémois will challenge the strikers of OL, PSG will go to Le Mans and Nice will go to Saint-Brieuc. Finally, Lille could play a Northern derby since the Mastiffs will face the winner of the Haguenau-Dunkirk match. As a reminder, the round of 16 will begin on February 5.
