Medvedev, 5th in the world and seeded N.5, was beaten in five sets 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (8/10), 1-6, 7-6 (10/ 7) by the American Learner Tien, 121st in the world and from the qualifications. The match lasted 4 hours and 49 minutes at the Margaret Court Arena.

Tien, 19, will face Frenchman Corentin Moutet, 69th in the world, in the third round of his very first participation in the Australian Open.
