management takes action

OL reacts firmly to the violence by its supporters at Bourgoin-Jallieu. Future sanctions for those identified at fault and measures to avoid new incidents which tarnish the image of the club. Management wants to show its determination to fight against these excesses.

The scenes of violence which broke out on Wednesday evening following the Coupe de match between Bourgoin-Jallieu and Olympique Lyonnais shocked the world of football. According to sources close to the matter, supporters caused damage to the Pierre-Rajon stadium and fought with local fans, requiring the intervention of the police. A woman was even injured in these scuffles and taken to hospital.

Faced with these extremely serious incidents which tarnish the image of the club, OL management quickly reacted this Thursday morning through the voice of its executive general director on social networks. In a firm message, he assured that “OL does not tolerate any violence from its supporters” and that the club would take the necessary measures.

Towards individual sanctions for those at fault

The first step announced by Lyon management is to precisely identify the perpetrators of this violence by viewing video surveillance images from the Bourgoin-Jallieu stadium. A collaboration has been initiated with the leaders of the Isère club in this regard.

Once violent individuals have been identified, OL provides for individual sanctions against them. This could range from stadium ban for future matches up to possible legal proceedings depending on the seriousness of the acts committed, whether physical violence, racist insults or damage to property.

These incidents must no longer tarnish the image of OL.

Zero tolerance for violence in stadiums

Beyond the sanctions against the guilty individuals, the OL management wishes to forcefully reaffirm its policy of zero tolerance towards any form of violence at the stadium and outside. The club is committed to working hand in hand with public authorities to strengthen security during matches.

Concrete measures should be discussed soon such as stricter supervision of supporter movements, reinforced identity checks at stadium entrances or even increased police force on risky match evenings. The objective is clear: to eradicate the hooligan excesses which plague football.

Restore a positive image of the club and football

By reacting firmly and quickly to these acts of violence, the management of Olympique Lyonnais is sending a clear message. She refuses to allow the actions of a minority of uncontrollable supporters to permanently tarnish the reputation of the club and tarnish the image of football as a whole.

Beyond the necessary sanction of those at fault, a lot of in-depth work must be carried out to promote the positive values of sport and the festive spirit in the stadiums. Awareness and prevention actions will undoubtedly be developed in this direction among supporters in the coming months.

The world of football holds its breath and hopes that the measures announced by OL will make it possible to sustainably stem the violence in the stands. All eyes will be on Groupama Stadium during the next meetings to see if the promised zero tolerance will really be applied. The future of popular and family football depends on it.
