End of the second round this Thursday at Melbourne. After the qualifiers Benjamin Bonzi, Arthur Son et Ugo Humberttwo other French people had been placed on the program to try to reach the third round of this Australian Open 2025. First in line, Gaël Monfils did the job against Daniel Altmaier and joined Taylor Fritz. In the process, Corentin Moutet also took his chance against Mitchell Krueger. Jannik Sinner held his rank but still lost a set against Tristan Schoolkate, 173rd in the world. On the other hand, it’s over for the sensation João Fonseca, stopped by Lorenzo Sonego. Holger Rune managed to extinguish Matteo Berrettini.

Monfils advances strong and will play Fritz in the 3rd round
Gaël Monfils is in great shape at the start of the year. Winner of theATP 250 d’Auckland last week, the Parisian scored a 6th victory in a row on Tuesday in a clash of generations against the powerful Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The 38-year-old was calmer this Thursday by taming the German Daniel Altmaier, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3). Confident of his strength, Monfils knew how to push his opponent into error and avoid spending too much energy. A good idea because he will have to put in a great match against Taylor Fritz Saturday in the third round.
Moutet has fun and waits for Medvedev
Corentin Moutet had a lot of fun when he entered the fray against Alexei Popyrin, diminished but catchy until the end in front of his audience. The Frenchman had fun again this Thursday by having a good match against Mitchell Krueger146th in the world and out of qualifying. The Parisian won strongly 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4. The amortization of Moutet have once again wreaked havoc against a Kruger catchy, which was offensive. In the third round, the Frenchman could find himself against Daniil Medvedev. This is the fifth time that Moutet goes to the third round of a Grand Slam, the first to Melbourne. Only Wimbledon is missing from his list now.
Sinner drops his first set, De Minaur and Fritz easy, Medvedev to come
Jannik Sinner is at Melbourne to keep his crown. Jostled but convincing in the first round against Nicolas Jarrythe Italian had started his season well. This Thursday, against the local Tristan Schoolkate, the Italian was pushed around for a round and a half before coming through and winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3. Uninspired, the Transalpine seemed lacking in sensations but showed maturity and patience to crack the 173rd in the world, brilliant in the first round. Without being brilliant, Sinner still continue to advance and will be able to gain strength against Marcos Giron.
Daniil Medvedev was for his part afraid of the Thai Kasidit Samrej. Finalist last year, the Russian was led two sets to one and could have lost big. We will have to reassure ourselves in the face of Learner Tien. Taylor Fritz was merciless towards Cristian Garin, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 while the local star Alex de Minaur upgraded Tristan Boyer6-2, 6-4, 6-3.
Fonseca stops, Rune erases Berrettini… the rest of the program
Amazing in the first round, Joao Fonseca, 113th in the world, could not extend the dream. The native of Rio, best player under 19 in the ATP rankings, won a fourteenth victory in a row on Tuesday against Andrey Rublev, his first famous victim in his first match in a Grand Slam final draw. But, this Thursday, Fonseca gave in against the ever dangerous Lorenzo Sonego6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. It was the Brazilian’s first five-set match. The latter is to be followed in 2025 and will quickly become talked about again.
A few other shocks took place. The most interesting was perhaps the one between Holger Rune et Matteo Berrettini. In a close match, it was the Dane who took the best 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). Rune was well inspired to save two set points in the last set. Ben Shelton knew how to bend Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 while Denis Shapovalov was tamed by Lorenzo Musetti, 7-6(3), 7-6(6), 6-2.
