We can say that FC Barcelona has started the year well. Winner of the Spanish Super Cup after once again slapping Real Madrid on Sunday (5-2), the Catalans qualified on Wednesday for the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey by signing a new recital against Betis Sevilla (5 -1).
Even without its scorer Robert Lewandowski, on the bench, Barça strolled on its Montjuic lawn with goals from Gavi (3rd), Jules Koundé (27th), Raphinha (58th), Ferran Torres (67th) and Lamine Yamal (78th).

In the wake of a grandiose Yamal, Jules Koundé delivered an absolutely magnificent performance. Scorer, therefore, the full-back of the France team came within a few millimeters of scoring a double. And when we say millimeters, it’s not an image. The VAR in fact refused his goal for a tiny piece of shoe which had apparently exceeded a fictitious line drawn according to the last Sevillian defender.
Where is common sense?
When we see the position of the bodies of the Frenchman and the Betis defender, it’s still enough to drive you crazy. Koundé is clearly behind when the ball goes, and it is not because he is 44 rather than 43 that he should be considered in an illegal position
But this is what technology leads to, a binary vision of things, sometimes devoid of all logic and common sense. A little frustrated, obviously, the international tricolor preferred to smile after the meeting, as shown in his story posted on Instagram, in which he calls on his equipment manufacturer by telling him that we should “perhaps review the shape” of his shoes.
This episode will remain in the realm of anecdote, given the scale of Barcelona’s victory. What is not, however, is the dimension taken by Jules Koundé in recent months. The Frenchman is simply unplayable at the moment, very secure at the back and increasingly comfortable and decisive in his offensive contribution. We doubted, we admit, but we must face the facts: Koundé is currently one of the best full-backs in the world.
