Barcelona Pays Tribute to Hugo Sotil, Peruvian Legend

FC Barcelona paid tribute to the memory of Hugo ‘Cholo’ Sotil, the legendary Peruvian footballer and iconic figure of the club, with an emotional minute’s silence before the Copa del Rey match against Real Betis. Sotil died on December 30, 2024, at the age of 75, leaving an indelible legacy in football history.

Players from both teams gathered in the center of the pitch to honor one of the best foreign players to ever wear the Blaugrana jersey. In a statement on their official website, Barca highlighted the importance of Sotil, who formed an unforgettable attacking partnership with Johan Cruyff in the 1970s.

“In the minutes which preceded the start of this meeting, a very moving moment was experienced. A minute of respectful silence was observed in memory of Hugo Sotil, who died on December 30 at the age of 75,” said declared the Catalan club.

Barça recalled that Sotil, born in Ica, Peru, on May 18, 1946, was known for his skillful, daring and intuitive style of play, which was always synonymous with spectacle. “The popular ‘Cholo’ captured the hearts of Blaugrana fans of his era,” the club added.
