what computing power for the game console?

While sales of the game console Switch continues to slow down, Nintendo is preparing the next generation with a Switch 2 which could be made official very soon with marketing later in the year.

Details are accumulating regarding this new model, a sign of its almost imminent launch, and we already know that it will use the principle of hybrid console can be used in portable mode or as a home console attached to a dock, always with the detachable Joy-con controllers.

Better than a Steam Deck, less than an Xbox Series S

Indications of its performance in these two modes have emerged through unofficial data. The Switch 2 console would therefore have a GPU clocked at 561 MHz and delivering a calculation capacity of 1,71 TFLOPS in portable mode, barely more than a Steam Deck console (1.6 TFLOPS).

With its dock, the GPU would have an almost doubled speed, giving it a computing power of 3,1 TFLOPS. It would be a little less than an Xbox Series S (4 TFLOPS) and obviously far from the home consoles of the moment (10 to 15 TFLOPS).

DLSS support and backwards compatibility

The Switch 2 console should include an SoC Tegra 239 from Nvidia composed of an octa-core CPU and an Ampere GPU with 2048 CUDA cores. The whole thing should be able to support upscaling / antialiasing DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), which will provide improved graphics rendering and better framerate without requiring enormous additional power.

It remains to be seen how much the Switch 2 console games can be improved with this process. The Switch 2 console will also allow titles from the original Switch console to be run in an always welcome effort at backwards compatibility in addition to immediately providing a comprehensive catalog.
