The Iranian regime sought Thursday morning to portray Hamas and Palestinian terrorist organizations as victors in the “Iron Swords” war, calling the ceasefire agreement a “defeat for Israel.” The Revolutionary Guards said in a statement that “the end of the war and the imposition of the ceasefire represent a clear and major victory for Palestine, and an even greater defeat for the monstrous Zionist regime.”
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei posted a message in Hebrew on X: “The history books will write that there was a group that murdered thousands of children and women in Gaza! However, everyone will eventually understand that the firm resistance of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian uprising forced the Zionist entity to withdraw.”
This rhetoric comes as Iran, which began the Hamas war with a significant strategic advantage, now finds itself in a weakened position. The country has suffered several major setbacks in recent months: the Israeli offensive in Lebanon has significantly weakened Hezbollah, pro-Iranian militias in Iraq have stopped firing, and the Assad regime in Syria has been toppled.
The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran represented a particular humiliation for Iran, while the vast Israeli air offensive which crippled its defense systems, after the direct firing of Iranian missiles towards Israel, left it vulnerable to future attacks. In this context of weakening, Iran plans to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Russia tomorrow in Moscow.
China, an ally of Iran and Russia, joined countries welcoming the ceasefire agreement. China’s Foreign Ministry expressed hope that “the agreement will be effectively implemented and result in a complete and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.”
