FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick will not ask his leaders to recruit a replacement for Inigo Martinez, injured Sunday in the Spanish Super Cup and absent for a month and a half.
Since the start of the season, the Pau Cubarsi-Inigo Martinez duo has been particularly complementary and has contributed to FC Barcelona’s good results. The young central defender trained at La Masia can count on his experienced 33-year-old teammate to help him progress. Together, they play the line perfectly, as Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappé were able to see during the first Clasico of the season, won 4-0 by Barça at the Bernabeu on October 26. The Basque’s injury is therefore bad news for Hansi Flick. Martinez was injured at the start of the match on Sunday against the Merengue in the final of the Spanish Super Cup (5-2). He was replaced by Ronald Araujo, who played his role as a defensive pillar well. But the Uruguayan continues to proclaim his desires elsewhere. It therefore does not constitute a lasting solution to replace Inigo Martinez, who should be in the infirmary for at least a month.
Christensen will replace Martinez, not Koundé
According to Marca, Hansi Flick has decided that Andreas Christensen will replace Inigo Martinez until his return. The Danish defender is operational again after injuring his Achilles tendon during the first day of La Liga at Valencia (2-1) in August. There was talk of him leaving this winter but, given the situation, he should be retained.
Hansi Flick made two strong choices after Martinez’s injury: not to ask for a recruit to his management while Barça has just returned to the nails of Spanish financial fair play after four years spent bringing the deficit to a fairer level proportions. And he did not think of refocusing Jules Koundé even though this is the position where he was trained. But the Frenchman has become excellent at right back, as evidenced by the colossal work done on Sunday evening to muzzle Vinicius Jr and his magnificent assist for Raphinha’s header.
