Nearly 5 trillion streams of music online last year

If you’ve been listening to a lot more music in 2024 — and especially a lot from female pop singers — you’re not alone.

In the United States, on-demand streaming grew at a rate of 6.4%, totaling $1.4 trillion.

Contemporary music fuels growth. The overwhelming majority of US streams (79.5%) were for songs released in 2010 or later.

Songs released between 2020 and 2024 accounted for almost half of all streams.

And Taylor Swift, the most streamed singer-songwriter in the world in 2024, is only partially responsible.

The dominance of pop

By mid-2024, Luminate determined that Latin music had become the fastest-growing genre in the United States (up 15.1% from summer 2023), followed by pop , rock and country.

A lot can change in six months, because pop is now in the lead, followed by rock and Latin music.

“We’ve seen some interesting trends in the U.S.,” noted Jaime Marconette, vice president of music insights and industry relations at Luminate.

“Latin music was the fastest growing on-demand music genre in the United States during the first half of the year, based on genre growth,” he said. However, due to a shift in online listening activity in the second half of the year, pop took the top spot.”

“Female solo artists have led this increase in pop music consumption, as streams to their music have been responsible for nearly two-thirds of all audio streams among the top 100 pop artists in the United States.”

Six women dominate the charts: Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan.

Among the ten most listened to songs, we find at the top Beautiful Thingsby Benson Boone; Espressoby Sabrina Carpenter; Birds of a Fatherde Billie Eilish, Lose Controlby Teddy Swims, as well as Die with a Smileby Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.

Pop reigns supreme, but just like in 2023, when it comes to overall music listening in the United States, R&B and hip-hop still lead, accounting for more than one in four listens in the United States.

Regional Mexican music continues to grow

Even though pop has replaced Latin music as the fastest-growing listening genre in the United States, its popularity is not slowing. As of 2024, regional Mexican music has overtaken Latin pop as the largest Latin subgenre in the United States.

“Latin music continued to grow in volume and share of total audio listening in the United States during 2024,” said Jaime Marconette. When looking at the activity of Latin subgenres, regional Mexican music has dominated in terms of growth.”

Regional Mexican music – a catch-all term that encompasses mariachi, banda, corridos, norteño, sierreño and other genres – has become a global phenomenon in recent years, topping music charts and reaching new audiences as it crosses borders.
