While recognizing the importance of the Atlantic Alliance during the Cold War, the senator affirmed that it was important for the United States to have not “just defense allies”, but “competent defense allies, capable of defending their region.
Donald Trump declared in early January that NATO countries must increase their defense budgets to 5% of their GDP.
The elected president makes no secret of the little regard he has for the Atlantic Alliance, a pillar of security in Europe since the Second World War.
In particular, he sowed panic during the electoral campaign by threatening to no longer guarantee the protection of NATO countries against Russia if they did not devote a sufficient budget to their defense.
Marco Rubio, current Republican senator from Florida, also called for “bold diplomacy” from the United States to end the war in Ukraine.
