Germany’s commitment to Ukraine
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visited kyiv on Tuesday, demonstrating Germany’s continued commitment to supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The visit follows a meeting Mr Pistorius held in Poland with his counterparts from France, Italy and the UK to discuss arms supplies to Ukraine. The German government stressed that Mr. Pistorius’ trip was aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s confidence in its lasting support.
Uncertainty around American politics
During his visit, Pistorius is expected to meet senior Ukrainian officials. This comes in a period of uncertainty regarding American policy towards Ukraine, while the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump will take place in less than a week. kyiv fears that the new administration will pressure Ukraine to make concessions to Russia. Therefore, Ukrainian officials have actively engaged with their European counterparts in anticipation of these potential changes.
Germany is Ukraine’s second largest aid provider after the United States, but discussions are ongoing within the country regarding the level of support offered. At the same time, Russian authorities have reported significant drone attacks targeting various regions of the country. In Saratov, Governor Roman Busargin said two industrial enterprises in Saratov and Engels were damaged. This region is home to a Russian bomber plane base, which was targeted by Ukrainian forces last week.
