The 2025 Australian Open already has its share of surprises and confirmations in store for us! Alcaraz dominates, Djokovic stumbles against a qualifier and Osaka shines brightly for her comeback. Who will do well in this first Grand Slam of the year?
The 2025 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, is already in full swing in Melbourne! And the least we can say is that this edition has its share of surprises in store for us from the first rounds. Between the prowess of some, the fears of others and the triumphant returns, a look back at the highlights of this second night on the Australian courts.
Alcaraz crushes everything in its path
World number 3 and a more than serious contender for the title, Carlos Alcaraz continues to soar at the start of the tournament. The 21-year-old Spaniard made short work of the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (65th in the world), swept away in three short sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. “I want to spend as little time as possible on the court at the start of the tournament,” the phenomenon soberly declared after his demonstration. With this level of play, he is the scarecrow of the table.
Djokovic jostled but qualified
The title holder and big favorite Novak Djokovic had to fight hard to overcome qualifier Jaime Faria (125th). Broken in the second set, the Serb was forced to play a fourth set before winning 6-1, 6-7[4]6-3, 6-2. A little warning which proves that he is not untouchable and will have to raise his level to go to the end.
Sensation: Zheng takes the door!
The main surprise of the night came from the women’s draw with the premature elimination in the second round of Qinwen Zheng, reigning Olympic champion and 4th in the world. The Chinese could do nothing against the German Laura Siegemund (97th), winner in two sets 7-6[3]6-3. “I didn’t make the right decisions at important moments,” Zheng lamented. A disappointment for one of the big favorites.
Osaka confirms its return to the top level
Faller of Karolina Muchova (20th) at the end of a great battle in three sets (1-6, 6-1, 6-3), Naomi Osaka (51st) made a very convincing start to the tournament. Back at her best after a maternity break, the Japanese will face another young mother, Belinda Bencic, in the next round. A highly anticipated duel between two confident players.
If the first rounds have already reserved their share of emotions, there is no doubt that the rest of the tournament will still have other surprises and twists in store for us. In Melbourne, the road is still long until the final consecration!
