Why the match between and Maccabi Tel Aviv is classified as high risk

A major security system will be put in place on Thursday around the Adidas Arena for the meeting between and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Euroleague. The arrival of Israeli athletes and their supporters raises fears of violence due to the situation in the Middle East.

Once again, the war in the Middle East enters Parisian sporting events. The match on Thursday January 16 between Paris Basketball and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Basketball Euroleague was classified as high risk by the National Division for the Fight against Hooliganism (DNLH).

The match, counting for the 22nd day of the prestigious European Cup, was classified as risk level 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. The meeting is the subject of great attention in view of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza, which began in October 2023.

In a decree published Tuesday, the police headquarters of the city of Paris indicated that the match “is likely to constitute a privileged and symbolic target for acts of a terrorist nature”, in a “current context of very high threat”.

The arrival of this emblematic multi-sport club, a true Israeli institution, so much so that it is nicknamed “the nation club”, crystallizes concerns. Recently, incidents have increased on the sidelines of travel by Israeli supporters.
