The price of butane gas remains stable, assured the Minister Delegate in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, specifying that this issue is not on the government’s agenda. This announcement comes as Morocco devotes more than 15 billion dirhams each year to subsidizing this product, support intended to mainly benefit the most deprived households.
However, the current distribution of these subsidies reveals striking inequalities. The poorest 20% of the population receive only 14% of this aid, while the richest 20% receive 27%, almost double. This observation highlights the lack of precise targeting of beneficiaries, a recurring problem for subsidized products.
To remedy this situation, Fouzi Lekjaa called for a reform of the aid system. It proposes introducing direct cash transfers to vulnerable households, a measure deemed more effective in ensuring that funds reach those who really need them. By optimizing the system, the government could not only better support deprived categories, but also free up budgetary margins for other social priorities.
The minister’s appeal is also addressed to Parliament, invited to collaborate with the executive to design mechanisms adapted to this reform. The objective is clear: to ensure that subsidies target exclusively the populations for which they are intended, while strengthening the efficiency and social justice of the system.
