CH: “We’re going to have a team that can win every year soon,” says Geoff Molson

It was Tuesday that the inauguration in Quebec of a 15th Bleu blanc rouge community skating rink of the Canadiens Children’s Foundation was held, very close to the Canac des Capitales Stadium.

The owner of the Montreal Canadiens, Geoff Molson, was present to comment on the recent successes of the Canadiens and also the future of hockey in Quebec.

Before the start of the season, Geoff Molson expressed the wish to see the Habs “in the mix this season”. With seven wins in his last 10 games and on the verge of the playoffs, he is encouraged by the performance of his team.

“We had a difficult start to the season. From the beginning of December, we started playing well as a team and it’s great to see. We are very happy, we are in the mixand I hope it will continue, but it’s a long season,” said Molson.

Three years after their hiring, Geoff Molson also took the opportunity to salute the work of his close guard in Kent Hughes, Jeff Gorton and Martin St-Louis.

“It is certain that the work of Jeff Gorton, Kent Hughes, Martin St-Louis and the teams around them is truly excellent. We are very happy with the progress we have made together over the last three years. I have no doubt that this will continue and we will have a team that can win every year soon. »

Since the Kings’ visit to Quebec last fall, rumors have been strong regarding a return of the Canadian to the Videotron Center for a preseason match between them and the Senators. If everything is not yet completely put together, everything indicates that Quebec will be on the preparatory calendar for the CH.

“We are not far from an agreement. We hope to play a preseason game here next year against Ottawa. It’s not finalized yet, but it’s very likely that we will be here next year. »

Asked about a possible return of the Nordiques to Quebec, the owner of the Canadian has never hidden his openness to supporting the return of a team to the Old Capital.

“We are open, and if the opportunity ever presents itself, we are there to support it. We discuss expansion from time to time (between governors, Editor’s note), but it is not a big subject at the moment. Every time the subject of expansion is discussed, we talk about Quebec City. »

From a business point of view, seeing a second team establish itself in the Quebec market does not seem to bother him.

“Even if our convenience store is doing well, we can live with two convenience stores. »

As for the facilities inaugurated today, they have been accessible to citizens since the end of December. A services pavilion remains to be added by spring and it is a safe bet that even with a Canadian logo in the center, the biggest Nordic fans will also want to take advantage of it.
