In search of the only Grand Slam title missing from his record in Melbourne, Carlos Alcaraz swept aside the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka on Wednesday in the second round of the Australian Open.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, four-time winner of major tournaments and third seed in Melbourne, won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-4 in 1 hour 20 minutes against the 65th player in the world.
In the first round, he also scored a victory in three sets against the Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko.
Alcaraz will face the Australian Jordan Thompson, 27th in the world, or the Portuguese Nuno Borges, 33rd, for a place in the round of 16.
If he wins in Melbourne, where his best result is a quarter-final in 2024, Alcaraz will become the youngest player in history to win all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Other 2nd round results (men’s singles)
- Jiri Lehecka (CZE) beat Hugo Gaston (FRA) 6-3, 3-1 (RET)
- Tomas Machac (CZE/no 26) bat Reilly Opelka (USA) 3-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4
