Australian Open – Elise Mertens eliminated by Jessica Pegula in the second round

The only Belgian to have passed the first round of singles, Mertens inherited the finalist of the last US Open in the second round. An opponent she had beaten in their first three confrontations.

Jessica Pegula will meet Serbian Olga Danilovic (WTA 55) in the third round.

Mertens, 29, is playing the Australian Open for the eighth time. She reached the semi-finals in 2018 for her first participation. In 2020, 2021 and 2022, she reached the fourth round (round of 16).
