At 34 years old, Damian Lillard still has several years to shine in the NBA. But before putting away his sneakers, the leader could be tempted by an experience in Europe.
Damian Lillard in EuroLeague? It seems complicated to imagine but you should never say never. Interviewed by Toni Canyameras of Sports World A few days ago, the All-Star leader did not close the door to an experience on the Old Continent, even if he is not planning for the moment.
“It’s something I’ve talked about with some of my family over the last couple of years, but haven’t seriously thought about. What if I went to play on a EuroLeague team just for the experience at the end of my career?”
“But it’s something I haven’t seriously thought about. But you never know.”
This is what we call a door that is not closed but not really open either. Lillard has time to think about it in detail anyway since he still has two years of contract with the Bucks after the current season, including a player option that he is (highly) likely to activate. At the end of his contract, he will then turn 37 and he will then be able to decide if he wants to push a little further in the NBA or if he prefers to try one last experience abroad before hanging up the call.
In the past, some All-Stars have chosen to join Europe at the end of their career. Allen Iverson ended up in Türkiye, at Besiktas. Dominique Wilkins also had a (successful) stint in Greece before returning to the US. However, rare examples among players of this status. But as Lillard says, “you never know.”
