Moscow is willing to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, but it is important to agree on broader security issues to end the ongoing conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei said on Tuesday Lavrov, during his annual press briefing.

MOSCOW, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — Moscow is willing to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, but it is important to agree on broader security issues to end the ongoing conflict, said Tuesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his annual press briefing.

Lavrov said it would be essential to eliminate threats to Russia’s western borders, as this is one of the root causes of the current conflict. He clarified that these threats can only be eliminated within the framework of broader agreements.

The Russian Foreign Minister noted that after US President-elect Donald Trump takes office, Moscow will study its official position on Ukraine.

He further said that Moscow welcomes the fact that the incoming US administration has focused more on the ground realities in Ukraine as part of a potential resolution of the Ukraine crisis.

Lavrov reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Trump, adding, however, that there is currently no proposal from the United States.
