William Eklund led the attack with a goal and two assists and the San Jose Sharks ended the Detroit Red Wings’ seven-game winning streak by beating them 6-3 at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings’ last eight-game winning streak dates back to January 17-February 5, 2008.
Rookie Macklin Celebrini contributed to two of the Sharks’ six goals (14-26-6) while Tyler Toffoli scored once and added an assist to his record.
Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice for Detroit (20-19-4).
Alexandar Georgiev made 25 saves in goal for the Sharks, who ended a three-game losing streak. San Jose is 4-13-1 in its last 18 games.
Ville Husso blocked 18 pucks in front of the losers’ cage.
Defenseman Jan Rutta didn’t take long to give the Sharks the lead, scoring his second goal of the season 1:45 into the game.
Nico Sturm then gave his team a two-goal lead at 17:41 with San Jose playing down a man.
Tarasenko cut the lead to one goal by beating Georgiev at 1:28 of the second period.
Eklund, however, gave the Sharks a two-goal lead just 24 seconds into the third period.
Tarasenko came back with his second of the game to once again cut the lead to one goal at 6:05.
Mikael Granlund once again gave San Jose two priority goals by taking advantage of a five-man attack, 1:35 after Tarasenko’s goal.
The game of cat and mouse continued when Lucas Raymond brought his team back to within one goal for the third time in the match at 9:56.
Toffoli stunned the Red Wings by taking advantage of a turnover by defenseman Justin Holl right in front of his net to, unsurprisingly, give the Sharks a two-goal lead at 10:57.
Marco Ferraro closed the books in an empty net at 18:22.
Alex DeBrincat (six goals, five assists) and Patrick Kane (five goals, eight assists) both saw their streak of seven games with at least one point come to an end.
