South Korea: the president’s chief of staff wants to avoid clashes between the police and the president’s guard

Chung Jin-suk, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s chief of staff, vowed to prevent clashes between the president’s guard and police as they attempted to execute an arrest warrant against Mr. Yoon.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, he said a joint team of investigators is expected to make another attempt to execute the warrant as early as Wednesday. Investigators want to question the president about the martial law he declared last December.

A first arrest attempt was blocked on January 3 by the Presidential Security Service (PSS). Yoon Suk-yeol is suspected of orchestrating an insurrection.

Investigators plan to make another attempt, but the PSS refuses to cooperate.

The presidential chief of staff criticized the way investigators conducted the investigation. According to him, they are trying to sideline Mr. Yoon and treat him like a drug dealer, while he is still the head of state.

He said he was particularly worried about possible clashes between the police and the PSS.

He said he intended to work with investigating authorities so they could question the president elsewhere than at the presidential residence.

He will, he added, do everything in his power to prevent a clash from leading to a national crisis.
