Mikel Arteta has made it one of his priorities in recent months. And he is on the verge of winning his case. According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are very close to completing the transfer of Martin Zubimendi for next summer. The Gunners have been discussing with Real Sociedad for more than a year to recover the Spanish international (15 caps, 1 goal). And after long months of negotiations, the two clubs almost reached an agreement.
Arsenal are expected to lift the 25-year-old midfielder’s release clause, which is worth around 60 million euros. A way to definitively overtake Liverpool and Manchester City, also interested in the player trained in the Basque Country. Real Sociedad, however, insisted on keeping their playing master until the end of the current season.
A first experience far from his Basque cocoon for Zubimendi
The recruitment of Martin Zubimendi should allow the London club to compensate for the announced departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho, who will be at the end of their contract next summer. Trained at Real Sociedad, the 1.81m right-hander should take the opportunity to leave his native region and have his first experience abroad.
While waiting to welcome him, Arsenal will continue to be active on the transfer market. Between now and the end of the winter window, the Gunners want to strengthen offensively to make up for the injury absences of Gabriel Jesus, seriously injured in the knee, and Bukayo Saka, struggling with his hamstring.
